Welcome
We've counted the cost. We've laid the foundation. We've run it up the flagpole to see who saluted. And after nearly three years of prep work, false starts, and getting our i's dotted and t's crossed, it's time to kick it into gear and get this machine rolling.
Sorry, the word shop was having a sale on cliches.
According to a recently released report by the Sacramento Hunger Coalition, over 218,000 individuals in Sacramento are "food insecure", meaning at various times, they literally don't know where their next meal is coming from. For some, this is due to homelessness. For others, it may be un- or underemployment. And for many, it's the consequence of the economic times, where income just isn't enough to stretch out til the next paycheck.
Whatever the root cause, we believe that in a society that claims to care about our disadvantaged, and to value the dignity of every individual, allowing hunger to continue is inexcusable. So we are ready to end it.
Many people faced with food insecurity seek help through food banks and food closets. These organizations serve the local population by providing good, healthy food to those in need, often with no government help. They do an amazing job, but frequently they have their own resource issues, forcing them to either turn away clients, or reduce the amount of food that can be provided. If we can raise the amount of support for our local food banks and food closets, we can tip the scales enough to ensure that no one ever walks away with their needs unmet. Or, as we like to phrase it, none go hungry.
We believe that working together, a large number of people, doing just a little bit, can accomplish a miracle. Many hands do make light work (sorry, the word shop threw that one in for free). Our mission is to educate the local community, starting here in Sacramento, about food insecurity, and mobilize an army of folks who feel as we do, and are willing to do just a little bit to bring about an end to local hunger.
So, who's up for a little food fight? Stay tuned for details. And in the meantime, feel free to browse the site, and figure out how you can fit into the movement to end local hunger.
